During the time of lockdown, everyone is working from home. There are a lot of things you need to consider while working from home if you want it to be effective. The idea behind organizing everything is so you can have a productive and pleasant working environment even at home.
In order to create a comfortable and effective home office, you need to make a 6-day plan of action. The number of days can vary depending on various factors like the size of your home office or the amount of things that are already in there. If you have a space that’s already clean and smaller in size, the number of days can be reduced or vice versa.
Day 1
For the first day, keep a trash can and a paper shredder nearby. This is when you have to decide what you don’t need. Here are some points you should check in your checklist after you are done with the first day.
- Start with all the paper. Get it out of the cupboards, shelves and drawers. If you see something that is extremely old or has no use, take an immediate action and throw it in the shredder.
- Before moving any further, make labels and categories so you don’t lose track of what you are doing.
- If you have been keeping something for someone, this is the best time to return all of it. Remember, de-cluttering is key.
Day 2
After the first day, you will see that there is more stuff in the room then when you started. So, the second day will be all about making some space. So, tighten your handcuffs and get ready.
Here is a checklist for the day:
- Sort all the non-paper supplies and put them in pile. Again, don’t forget to make categories.
- After putting everything in piles, it’s time to take a closer look at the piles. It’s time to decide how many staplers you need. So, remove all the duplicates and either give them away or place them somewhere else.
- If you are left with some time, make sure that you throw all the papers that are just print outs of the records you might have in the computer. Go paperless.
Day 3
It’s time to get organized. Now is the time you start the process of personalization. The first thing to do on this day is to figure out an organizational process that works for you. you can make use of some of the following ideas to begin with:
- Keep an organized shelve space or a series of them to keep your papers and documents sorted.
- Keep all the things, that you use frequently, within reach. You can also use cups and boxes to keep them neat.
- For important documents, use traditional files.
- Don’t forget to label all the boxes and baskets that you use for storage purposes.
Day 4
It’s time to give your home office a nice makeover. By that we mean that you spend a good amount of time in making your home office clean and healthy. This will make it easier for you to spend a good amount of time in your home office. Let’s do it:
- Vacuuming your home office and cleaning everything would be the first step to take.
- Take a piece of soft and absorbent fabric and start cleaning all the shelves and the nooks.
- Wipes are the best option to clean glass and screens. You can specifically get monitor wipes to clean your screens.
- Time to get some fresh plants in to the room.
Day 5
This is the second stage of personalization where you can start considering your personal comfort. Some elements that can be considered include:
- A comfortable chair that will help you avoid any back injuries.
- A good source of light.
- A small stool to put your feet on.
Day 6
Here comes the final day and the ultimate stage of personalization. Now is the time to bring in all you need, emphasis on need, to make you feel happier while you are working. These elements might be:
- Some family or travel photos that make you feel at ease every now and then. You can also have some other pictures instead that make you feel motivated and help you work better.
- If you are a fan of extravagant and traditional textiles, you can add some of those to your home office.
- Bring in a vase and put some fresh flowers or some other source of pleasant fragrance.
- Light a scented candle.
These are some pointers to get you in to the groove. You can take it to the next level once you get to it.
